It is time. Time to end the great math class debate. What is the better resource for student notebooks? Is it the binder? Or the interactive notebook in a composition notebook?

Time for the great debate: Binders vs. Interactive Notebooks in Math

I am qualified to help guide you to the answer because I have used both in my math classroom. For nine years, students used binders in my classroom before I switched to interactive notebooks. I can give you all the dirty details of each one and I promise to reveal my choice at the end! I will not leave you hanging.

Questions to consider before making your decision

Answering these questions will help guide you as you read through the features and each resource’s good and bad.

Alright…let’s get to the debate. First up…

SIZE/PORTABILITY

Binders can be bulkier and less portable, especially if you use a larger ring size or have many pages. They are better suited for keeping at home or in a classroom. If your students do not have lockers, carrying around a binder all day (which will grow throughout the year) can be cumbersome.

Interactive Notebook

Composition notebooks are typically more compact and portable, making them better for on-the-go use or taking notes in various locations.

WINNER: Interactive Notebook!

FORMAT

Binders are typically large, three-ring folders that can hold loose-leaf paper or sheet protectors. They come in various sizes, with the most common being 1-inch, 1.5-inch, and 2-inch ring sizes.

Composition Notebook

Interactive Notebook

Composition books are bound notebooks with a sewn or glued spine. They have a fixed number of pages, and you cannot add or remove pages.

WINNER: TIE!

CUSTOMIZATION

Math Binder

Binders offer high customization since you can add, remove, and rearrange pages easily. This makes them ideal for notebooks where you want flexibility in organizing content. To add worksheets or homework, papers must be hole-punched by teacher or student.

Composition Notebook

Interactive Notebook

Composition notebooks have fixed pages, so customization is limited to what you can do within the existing pages. They are less flexible for rearranging content. For customization of interactive notebooks, students cut, fold, and tape/glue in extra items to make it their own. The use of color and highlighting is also encouraged for personalizing student notebooks.

WINNER: BINDER!

DURABILITY

Math Binder

Binders are generally considered more durable because you can replace damaged pages and sheet protectors. But I found that students are not careful with their binder and the holes on the edges of their paper easily tore. Even when I provided hole reinforcers for my students, their notebooks became messy and unorganized if they were not meticulously careful.

Composition notebooks can be less durable as they can't be easily repaired if pages get damaged or torn. However, through my experience, they held up better throughout the year whether students kept them in my classroom or took them with them in their backpack each day.

WINNER: INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK!

COST

Binders themselves can be inexpensive, but the cost can add up when you consider purchasing sheet protectors, dividers, hole reinforcer, and loose-leaf paper.

Composition notebooks are relatively inexpensive and come in various price ranges depending on quality and brand. For interactive notebooks, you will add cost for tape or glue.

WINNER: INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK!

ORGANIZATION

Binders offer better organization options with the use of dividers, pockets, and sheet protectors. You can separate sections and store loose materials. The downside with having pockets is students tend to stuff papers there and don't take the time to properly insert them. Then, they become less organized than if they didn't have pockets at all.

Interactive Notebook

Composition books have fixed sections, which can be limiting for organizing content. However, you can use tabs or sticky notes to help with organization. Additionally, we number all the pages and use a table of contents which makes the students' notebooks much more organized.

WINNER: BINDER!

AESTHETICS

Binders can be customized with various cover designs, inserts, and labels, allowing for personalization.

Interactive Notebook

Composition notebooks often come in standard designs, and while you can decorate the cover, there's less scope for personalization of the cover. However, interactive notebooks in the classroom encourage personalization.

OVERALL WINNER!

So, in the great debate of Binders vs. Interactive Notebooks in math, which is the winner? It’s a close race, but I will continue to use interactive notebooks in my class. I love the effectiveness of a binder and the flexibility to add/remove pages. I also love that it easily holds full-size 11 x 8.5 in. pages. However, the overall effectiveness of the interactive notebook wins for me. I love the table of contents, the size, the durability, and the student-friendliness.
